Syriac language pilot, lesson 4 of 10 · text: Peshitta Genesis 1:26–28 exactly as printed in Nestle's 1889 chrestomathy (record quarry/nestle-1889-en/r3/c069-1.toml, checked against Barnes 1914) · you need: this document, a pencil, a piece of paper, and about 45–60 minutes.
What you will be able to do at the end: read the most quoted three verses of Genesis 1, and own the single idea that unlocks most of Syriac's grammar from here on — the possessive suffix, a little tag glued onto the end of a word that does the job English does with a separate word ("my," "his," "our").

The day-frame is gone. After three lessons of "and God said… let there be… and it was so… and God saw that it was beautiful… evening and morning," today's passage breaks the pattern — the days of the sun, birds, and animals (1:20–25) are skipped on purpose (low-value vocabulary, saved for the bank) and you land straight on the image-and-likeness verses. Expect the text to feel less scaffolded today. That's not an accident; it's the point.
The suffix idea. In English, "image" and "his image" and "your image" are three separate words wearing the same noun. In Syriac, "his image" and "your image" are ONE word: ܨܰܠܡܶܗ (ṣalmeh, "image-his") and ܨܰܠܡܳܟ (ṣalmāḵ, "image-your"). The possessive rides on the noun's tail. You already met this shape once, buried in Lesson 1's ܪܘܚܶܗ ("his-Spirit") — today you get to see it as the RULE, not a one-off. Two tails to learn today, both attached to the same word (ܒܨܰܠܡ־, "in-image-"):

Same trick works on verbs, later lessons will show — for now, nouns only, and only these two tails.
One more shape, on a command this time: ܦܪܰܘ ("be fruitful!") is a PLURAL IMPERATIVE — a command given to more than one person, ending in ־ܰܘ. You'll meet three of these back to back below, chained together the way English chains "be fruitful, and multiply, and fill."

Notes: the second suffix of the lesson — ܒܨܰܠܡܶܗ, "in HIS image" (God's own, now, not "our"), and ܒܰܪܝܶܗ, "he-created-HIM" — the same ־ܶܗ tail riding on a verb this time, a small preview of what Lesson 9 does at scale. ܠܳܐܕܳܡ is your first sight of the name ܐܳܕܳܡ — "Adam" — marked with ܠ because he's the object of the verb ("God created ADAM"). Notice the verse repeats itself almost word for word, the way the day-frame used to: "in his image / in the image of God he created him" is one thought said twice, a Hebrew rhetorical habit that carries straight into the Syriac.

Notes: today's three imperatives in a row — ܦܪܰܘ, ܘܰܣܓܰܘ, ܘܰܡܠܰܘ ("be fruitful, and multiply, and fill") — every one plural, every one ending ־ܰܘ, said to more than one person (the man and the woman together). ܟܘܒܫܘܗ̇ adds the SAME ־ܗ̇ "it" suffix onto an imperative: "subdue IT," the earth. The verse then repeats line 1's whole "fish of the sea, fowl of heaven" list almost verbatim — one more piece of evidence that repetition, not variety, is how this text (and this course) wants to teach you vocabulary.
Before you go on: read all three lines aloud once more. This is a short passage carrying a heavy new idea; slow, not fast, is the right pace today.
